A single volume written entirely by Italians on Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, this yearbook is an essential source of consultation, clear and concise, written by leading experts in the field. It includes 24 country sections, from Russia to Turkey, as well as Greece, Cyprus and the European republics of the former Soviet Union, which describe the major political and economic features of each country as well its international relations, and in addition provides a chronology of the most important events. The essays preceding the country sections analyze the causes, evolution and consequences of the international financial-economic crisis which hit the region extremely hard, with significant social and political as well as economic repercussions. The worrying developments assumed by the context in terms of the prospects and stability of global and national financial systems make this yearbook even more important and useful. The Guide is thus a work providing information and critical analysis which, year after year since 1998, updates readers in the form of an essential and basic tool for all those who desire or need, for purposes of work or simple interest, to know the major developments in this part of Europe.

The Centre for Central Eastern and Balkan Europe, University of Bologna, directed by Professor Francesco Privitera, relies on a dense network of relations interwoven by the International Network «Europe and the Balkans», its experts and scholars (over 200 from 28 European countries, the United States and Canada), and has stable relations with the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Diplomatic Institute, the Central European Initiative, the Institute for Foreign Commerce, the World Bank, the FAO and other international organizations. Based on this network, in operation since 1992 and enabling it to be present in the entire region, the Centre promotes research and specialized higher education as well as providing consultation on politico-diplomatic, legal, economic and cultural linguistic topics in central, east and Balkan Europe.

Abstract

The Guida ai paesi dell'Europa centrale, orientale e balcanica. Annuario politico-economico 2010 (Guide to Central and East European and Balkan Countries. Political-Economic Yearbook 2010) includes 24 country sections dealing in a comprehensive and original way with domestic and foreign policy and the economic situation of the area for the year 2009.

The special article preceding the country sections highlights the consequences of the international financial-economic crisis, originating with the collapse of the US financial system, on the political and economic systems of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Indeed, East European countries were among the most affected among emerging countries, so that they were even considered one of the main epicentres of the crisis.

In a series of essays, the Guide provides an analysis of the economic causes of the crisis in East European countries, discusses its evolution – also in the framework of international economic trends – and its repercussions on these countries' political systems and societies. Not only did it cause economic instability, but the crisis also contributed to feeding strong popular dissatisfaction, leading to significant social radicalization and political changes.

The timeliness and broad scope of the topics addressed and the worrying developments of the crisis which contrasts with the economic stability of the countries in this region and in the entire global economy make this yearbook an important tool for information and analysis; an essential guide for all those who, out of interest or for work, desire or need to know about the major developments in this part of Europe.
