(RE)INTEGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES IN MULTICULTURAL AND BORDER REGIONS

A CORDIAL INVITATION

The aim of the Conference is to give an assessment of past developments and conflict resolutions, an analysis of current situations and problems concerning spatial and social cross-border and inter-cultural integration/disintegration, and an evaluation of the future trends and opportunities for co-operation and development within a broader European and global context.

The conference will bring together researchers, educators, and activists from academia, the research sector, community organizations and others from different European and non-European countries.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

  • Prof. Julian Minghi from the University of South Carolina, Columbia (US):
    Julian Minghi has been appointed Distinguished Professor and one of the "fathers" of modern political geography and the study of integration processes in the border areas, shifting from conflict to harmony and co-existence.
  • Prof. Anssi Paasi from the University of Oulu (Finland):
    Anssi Paasi’s research work has focused on Finland and its territories and the social construction of identity. His scientific interest is focusing in particular on the theory and the changing meanings of territories and boundaries.
  • Prof. Giuliana Prato from the University of Kent, Canterbury (UK):
    Dr. Prato's research has addressed the relationship between social and cultural change and global processes, such as the politics of immigration and transnational power relations. From such a perspective, she has carried out research on the EU Stability Pact for South East Europe.

CONFERENCE AND REGISTRATION DETAILS

WHO IS INVITED TO THE CONFERENCE?

The Conference is open to scholars from various disciplines who may contribute to the analysis of the geopolitical, historical, cultural, social and economic aspects related to divergence and convergence processes and (re)integration perspectives and policies in multicultural and border regions.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS

The deadline for registration and proposal submissions is April 30, 2023. Later registrations will also be accepted, but the Conference Fee will be set to 200 € for registrations sent by June 30, and to 250 € for registrations submitted by August 31.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS

The official language of the conference is English.

All participants are required to send the title of their papers/presentations along with a one page abstract along with the registration form.

REGISTRATION, LOCATION AND ACCOMMODATION DETAILS

REGISTRATION AND FEES

The regular conference fee is set at €150 and includes:

  • programme materials;
  • the book of abstracts;
  • admission to all sessions;
  • coffee breaks and snacks;
  • the social dinner.

The conference fee will not include other items such as excursions and other possible activities/events.

GRADUATE STUDENTS (M.A., Ph.D. students/candidates)

Doctoral and post-doctoral students/researchers are welcome, both with oral and poster presentations. They will also benefit from a reduced fee (€ 80).

PORTOROŽ/PORTOROSE

Portorož is a small coastal town on the Adriatic. Its numerous hotels, restaurants, spas and casinos make it a popular tourist destination, and an excellent base for day trips and excursions further afield. Portorož is also a popular congress location. A visit to the nearby countryside, can color your day. The coastal towns of Piran, Izola and Koper are intertwined with narrow streets, leading to picturesque squares, encircled with mighty palaces. From the villages in hinterland, magnificent views of Istria open up, during spells of nice weather even Alps can be admired.

WEATHER

The climate in Portorož is typically Mediterranean with warm summers and mild winters; seasonal winds are common such as powerful burja and mild, cooling maestral in summer. Average air and sea temperature in September is 21 °C.

ACCESS

  • By car: highways from the directions of Ljubljana (the capital city of Slovenia), Triest (Italy) and the main road from Pula (Croatia).
  • By railway: The Koper Railway Station is 15km from Portorož.
  • By bus: The Portorož bus stop is located at the heart of Portorož, at the Portorož Auditorium turnoff, near a grocer.
  • By Air: The Portorož touristic Airport is 6 km from the town of Portorož, international Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport 145 km, Ronchi Airport (Italy) 80 km, Venice Marco Polo Airport (Italy) 200 km.
  • By ship: Boat trips are available to Venice as well as a number of panoramic trips. The Portorož Marina is 2 km from the town centre, the Izola Marina 7 km, and the Koper Marina and Port 16 km. The distance between Portorož and Venice is only 88 km (Lignano 35, Grado 24 km).

CALL FOR PAPERS

PECOB's call for papers

The Scientific Board of PECOB announces an open call for papers to be published with ISSN 2038-632X

Interested contributors may deal with any topic focusing on the political, economic, historical, social or cultural aspects of a specific country or region covered by PECOB.

Potential contributors must submit a short abstract (200-300 words) and the full text, which can be in English as well as any language from the countries covered by PECOB.

Upcoming deadlines for submitting proposals are:

November 30th, 2011
