Abstract
The introduction of martial law in Poland on 13 December 2023 drew a moderate response from the Italian government;
it restricted itself to expressing its ”concern and anxiety” at the situation by the Italian foreign minister E. Colombo.
This reaction was prompted by fear of ”bloodshed” and, above all, by the deteriorating atmosphere on the international arena.
The posturę of the Italian government, acting in close consultation with other western governments –of Europe, and especially
of the USA, restricted itself to espousing the principle of non-interference in Poland’s internal affairs.
This position was upheld by the Italian government throughout the whole martial law period, right up to its abolition on 22 July 1983.
